Tech Stocks Face Critical Test as Microsoft and Meta Earnings Put AI Spending Under the Microscope

by
July 29, 2026

Tech stocks are entering one of their most crucial weeks of the year as investors await quarterly results from Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Qualcomm, and later Amazon. After months of fueling the broader market rally, the sector is facing scrutiny over whether massive investments in AI are producing returns quickly enough to justify soaring valuations

Recent earnings from Alphabet and memory chipmaker SK Hynix have heightened those concerns even further. While both companies reported strong revenue and profit growth, investors focused instead on rising capital expenditures and the possibility that AI infrastructure spending could eventually outpace demand.

AI Spending Remains the Biggest Question

Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon are expected to spend hundreds of billions of dollars building AI infrastructure over the coming years, continuing an investment cycle that has benefited chipmakers, cloud providers, and data center operators.

Wall Street will pay close attention to management commentary on capital expenditures, cloud growth, and AI monetization after Alphabet's increased spending plans sparked a broad technology sell-off last week. Investors are no longer rewarding AI spending alone—they want evidence that those investments are translating into stronger revenue, profits, and long-term competitive advantages.

Chip Stocks Continue to Struggle

Semiconductor stocks remained under pressure after SK Hynix reported record quarterly operating profit that still fell short of Wall Street's lofty expectations. The results reinforced concerns that expectations for AI-related growth may have become too ambitious. Several factors continue to weigh on the sector:

  • Investors are questioning whether AI infrastructure spending can remain at current levels.
  • Rising memory production has sparked concerns about future supply and pricing.
  • Competition from China and ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to cloud the outlook.
  • Elevated valuations have made chip stocks especially vulnerable to profit-taking.

Despite the recent weakness, industry executives continue to argue that long-term demand for AI computing remains exceptionally strong.

Investors Rotate Within Big Tech

As semiconductor shares have struggled, investors have shifted toward technology companies viewed as less exposed to the current AI spending debate. Apple recently became just the second company to briefly surpass a $5 trillion market capitalization, benefiting from a more measured investment approach while still maintaining a strong ecosystem and services business.

At the same time, reports that Nvidia is exploring financing for a massive OpenAI data center project have reignited concerns about how AI infrastructure will ultimately be funded, adding another layer of uncertainty for the sector.

Looking Ahead

The coming days could determine the direction of technology stocks through the remainder of earnings season. Results from Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Qualcomm will offer investors a clearer picture of enterprise AI demand, cloud growth, smartphone trends, and the pace of future capital spending. If management teams can demonstrate that AI investments are driving meaningful business results, confidence in the sector could improve. But if spending continues to accelerate without equally strong signs of monetization, technology stocks may remain under pressure as investors reassess one of the market's biggest growth themes.
